Starting with Golden Coffee Pale, the brewers at pFriem have collaborated with Coava Coffee Roasters to create an inviting Pale Ale for both coffee and beer drinkers alike.

In new world Craft Brewing, adding coffee to beer has become a trend in recent time. Most often stouts, porters, and other dark styles of beers are infused with coffee, and even more popular is to have Imperial versions of these beers. The idea has been to play off the roasty and powerful notes of each beverage.

pFriem has taken a different approach and collaborated with our friends at Coava Coffee. Coava is known for using beautiful, fruit forward, and bright beans. We decided to compliment these flavors by making a golden beer with fruity and citrus hops to compliment the coffee flavors. The result is a very drinkable, bright, aromatic beer that combines these wonderful flavors.

Using Rahr Pale malt and flaked oats, the brewery creates a foundation of malt before adding El Dorado and Citra hops. Before long, the beer receives a chaperone in Ethiopia Bukisa as it ferments away in its stainless-steel vessel. Now available, as a draft-exclusive, Golden Coffee Pale is described by the brewers and staff of pFriem as having a

Slightly off-white foam on top of a golden bronze body.

and

Aromas of mango and papaya combined with roasted almonds with cherry chutney. Rich nutty flavors married with citrus and stone fruit. Aromatic hops and bright coffee notes dance together in harmony finishing with a tantalizing experience.

About the coffee used in Golden Coffee Pale Ale

The Ethiopia Bukisa was carefully roasted for you by Coava Coffee Roasters. Processed by the Bukisa Washing Station in the Yirgacheffe region at 1,800 - 2,00 meters, this fully washed coffee is a perfect example of why we love coffees from Ethiopia. This coffee is delicate yet juicy with citrus notes of Meyer lemon, cane sugar sweetness and hints of pineapple juice..

Look for Golden Coffee Pale Ale to be available at pFriem Family Brewers' taproom and nearby public houses, restaurants, and bars wherever you find pFriem Family beers.

Following up on the brewery's collaboration with Coava, the brewers sought build on the success of their award-winning lagers by releasing an homage to the Czech regions most famous lager, the Pilsner, by releasing a tmavé pivo or "dark beer".

Pilsners dominate Americans’ perceptions of Czech beer, but the Central European country has a dark, beery secret. The second most popular beer in the Czech Republic is near-black tmavé pivo, or “dark beer,” a brewing style that actually predates pilsner – and is widely popular in Czech taverns.

At Prague’s oldest brewery, U Fleků, founded in 1499, you’re only going to drink tmavé pivo with your goulash. U Fleků doesn’t brew any other kind of beer. Czech dark lagers have the complexity of Bavarian Dunkels with the smooth dark color of Schwarzbiers.

pFriem’s Czech Dark Lager combines traditional floor malted pilsner and dark malts with debittered roast malt. Perle, Czech Saaz and Tettnang hops balance the malts and lend to a truly beautiful bouquet!

Brewed with a whos-who of Pilsner malts, pFriem sets the stage with Weyerman Bohemian Pilsner, Weyerman Floor-Malted Bohemian Dark, Sladovny Pilsen, Carafa II, and CaraAmber. Staying true to a traditional Czech-style "dark beer", the brewery adds Perle, Saaz, and Tettnang hops. The result is a beer that is light in alcohol, at 5.3% but with notes of dates, toffee, and bread crust.

Taking a moment to publish their thoughts the brewers and staff described this "dark beer" as displaying a,

Burnt umber with dazzling ruby red hues, topped with a dense khaki foam.

with,

Full aromas of toasted bread, toffee, dates, and raison burst from the glass.  Silky smooth flavors of milk chocolate, anise, and caramel deluge the taste buds. Finishes with a kiss of roasted malt and toffee.

Available side-by-side with Golden Coffee Pale Ale, look for this draft-exclusive Czech Dark Lager to be featured at the pFriem Family Brewers' taproom and throughout Washington and Oregon, wherever you see the brewery's beers on draft.

pFriem Family Brewers is located at 707 Portway Ave #101 along Hood River’s scenic waterfront. For more information on their beers, their taproom hours, or other relevant information visit https://www.pfriembeer.com/.

About Coava Coffee

Coava began in Matt Higgins North Portland garage in 2008. The veteran barista and roaster bootstrapped the company by repairing motorcycles. Having spent years in specialty coffee, Matt dreamed of starting his own company where he could roast and prepare coffees that would be exciting for professional baristas and inviting to everyday drinkers. Matt knew that in order to accomplish this goal, sourcing exceptional “coava” would have to be the bedrock upon which his entire company was built.

...

In the end, it’s all about people. The relationships we have with coffee farmers, importers, wholesale partners, customers, and coworkers make it all worth it. We never forget how fortunate we are to get to work with the coffees we have, and we love being able to share them with you.

Inviting our customers who quickly become friends to try our coffees, hang out in our cafes, and laugh with our baristas is what brings us the greatest joy. Despite our years of collective experience, we know there’s always room to learn and improve, and we'd like to invite you to learn with us, to grow with us, and to experience the joy that comes from a great cup of coffee.
