As the weather shifts from a miserable, temperate, Northwest Spring to a (sort of) Spring 2.0 (aka, early Summer), Portland’s Von Ebert Brewing Company continue their campaign to put beer in hands and cans at every occasion. This time around, the brewery is pleased to announce the portability of their Agostini Pils.

Brewed in the Helles style, this is the latest lager from the brewery, packaged up in 16-ounce cans. For the inexperienced, Von Ebert’s Helles-style lager, is single decocted, a common technique of commercial breweries. As head brewer, Sean Burke, explained brewing beers like this were a reflection on his travels.

Having spent a fair amount of time in Munich, and Bavaria in general, I really came to appreciate the Helles style of beer and what it means to the people that love it and consume it regularly… Complexity is hard to achieve in light beers, but that’s what we set out to do with our Helles.”

We really wanted to let the malts in our Helles truly be experienced. The first step in accomplishing that was choosing high quality European base malts. To enhance the flavors we performed a decoction, where a portion of the mash is drawn off and boiled, then returned to the mash to raise the temperature to the next mash rest. This produces a more pronounced malt flavor without sweetness.

Helles is single decocted, which is a process allowing for maximum extraction of malted sugars from the grain. At 4.8% ABV (alcohol by volume), this beer has notes of fresh baked bread, crackers, and floral aromatics. In true style, the brewery used Hallertau Hersbrucker hops. But this is not the end of the story.

Named after famed Italian, motorcycle racer Giacomo Agostini, who raced during the 1960s and 1970s, Agostini Pils is a brewery favorite. Brewed to be a 5.0% Italian-style pilsner, Agostini have notes of orange peel and garden fresh spearmint, with a definite dry and crisp finish. But don’t expect the same ol’ Agostini Pils as the brewery has made some changes which have improved the overall character of the beer.

The goal with Agostini Pils was to showcase newer European hop varieties in the dry-hopping of the beer… We chose the Slovenian hop, Styrian Cardinal, which brought the wonderful orange peel and spearmint blend that nicely complemented the noble hops used in the kettle and whirlpool.

Look for both Agostini Pils and Helles, available in 16-ounces cans and four-packs at both Von Ebert locations.
