An imbiber's guide to Barleywine Bacchanal 2023, hosted by the Beveridge Place Pub.
With Spring being less than two weeks away, it's important to get your Winter beer drinking in while you can!
What better way than by visiting Beveridge Place Pub for their annual Barleywine Bacchanal, starting March 9th (thru the 12th)? Now in its 21st year, Beveridge Place Pub's celebration of all things barleywine invites guests to enjoy something new, something old, something barrel-aged, and something probably never seen again. That's right, among the list of beers featured at this year's event will be some from at least one brewery that has since closed.
Reaching out to the public house in Seattle's West Seattle neighborhood, Beveridge Place Pub responded with a list of some 25 beers. Besides this information, additional listings were recovered from their social media accounts. The result is a list of some 35 beers planned for the first day or as part vintage flights, throughout the week. Recognizing that many of you might be new to barleywine (aka barley wine barleywine style ale, or barley wine style ale), might be unfamiliar with the beers or the style, here's a handy guide.
More on the Imbiber’s Guide
Broken down by vintage, followed by the Pacific Northwest, and finally "everything else", you're invited to compare names on Beveridge Place Pubs daily menu, against this modest list. Except for vintage releases, descriptions have been omitted to avoid getting caught up in long descriptions.
Finally, the current standard for a beer being vintage is anything older than (say) several years. So, for example, a 2019 Barren Wood will be found in the Pacific Northwest section, while an Oakshire Barleywine '14 is in the vintage category.
In fact, the 'Pub has announced the following beers (included in this guide will be tapped on March 9th.

And that's it! Remember to stay hydrated, well nourished, and above all enjoy the 21st annual Barleywine Bacchanal.

Arctic Devil Barley Wine, aptly named after the ferocious wolverine of the north, is an English-style (meaning malt-inclined) barley wine. This strong ale is brewed once each year then aged in oak barrels for
several months before the entire batch is blended, bottled and released in the fall.
acEach annual batch of Arctic Devil Barley Wine represents the brewers’ resolve to create an intriguing and sought-after barley wine by precisely brewing to well-designed specifications, carefully selecting the type and combination of barrels to use for aging, and meticulously checking the beer as it ages. Distinct nuances and complexity are contributed by the wood, resulting in wonderful flavors that continue to change over time.
We invite you to savor Alaska’s most awarded barley wine upon its release and cellar some for future enjoyment.

This tons of malts and hops combined in one big fat, yet balanced brew.It jumps higher than yours, it builds houses bigger than yours, It’s mama is fatter than yours, it chops wood faster than yours, it’s father is could beat yours…. No reason to say, but Mine is bigger than yours!

Fermented with dates and figs, this smooth barleywine has a unique flavor.
The concept for this beer came from an old cellerman's manual Sam came across (for more on that, check out the video below).
At about 15% ABV, this beer is a great candidate for aging. Over time, the beer dries out and the pit fruit flavors come forward and the hops recede. Our recommendation? Grab a few bottles when you find it -- enjoy one now, and age the others for a bit. Let us know which you prefer!

Did you also at some point in your life get seduced by promising words like ‘probably (not) the best in the world’, ‘it (doesn’t really) work every time’ etc. This American Barley Wine says it how it is. It’s intense, attention seekingly hoppy and definitely your kind of beer. A beer with a big ego, drive and a huge thirst for recognition.

A big bad barleywine to warm you up this winter. Citrus, pine, toffee, caramel. All aged for 2 months on Bourbon barrels.

This big boy of a barleywine has been aged in bourbon barrels for 24 months, bringing heady bourbon, vanilla and sweet molasses aromas to the forefront, while burnt sugar, dark fruit and plum flavors round it out.
Malts - 2 Row Pale, Munich, Caramel 60, Extra Special, Victory
Hops - Centennial, Northern Brewer
Yeast - English Ale Yeast

ith a rich amber hue and a mild fruit forward aroma, our American-style Barleywine begins with a bold kick. A robust malt profile of caramel, light fruit, and biscuits marry with heaps of Pacific Northwest hops for balance. It finishes with a refined warming glow. It's great fresh but will certainly age with grace
10.4% ABV | 88 IBU
Barleywine is only the second take here at Upright, although the first from years ago was English style while this one is American. That means higher abv and more hops. In this case, 6 different varieties were added to an overnight boil, which produced a very deep malt character from a grist of nearly 98% Thomas Fawcett halcyon pale malt. The concentrated wort was fermented with one British and one American ale yeast, then split 60% into rum/bourbon casks and 40% into stainless steel for 4 months. The resulting blend shows remarkable balance for such a potent beer, with a very ingredient driven profile that doesn’t fight with higher alcohols
