An imbiber’s guide to the 2023 Hard Liver Barleywine Festival, at Brouwer's Cafe.
Depending on whom you speak to, the word is pronounced "barleywine" or "barley wine". While others, mostly friend will crown it with the word Ale. As in Barleywine Ale. Frankly, we think the term is redundant as there aren't any Stout Ales or Saison Ales in the world. But however you pronounce it, the word should be added to your frontal cortex of words to utter in February and March. Right up there with snow, accumulation, and taxes.
In other words, it's another year for barleywines in large quantiles at nearby alehouses!
Which is why we are reminding you about Brouwer's Cafe and their Hard Liver Barleywine Festival. Oh, and here’s Brouwer’s Cafe’s version of a pep talk!
The Hardliver Barleywine festival is now old enough to drink itself! That’s right, this is our 21st Hardliver!! Originally held at the Phinney Center in 2003, it was moved to Brouwer’s Café for our grand opening on St Paddy’s weekend in 2005 (whoa what a party that was!).
Whether you’re a hardcore Hardliver attendee or you haven’t been in a decade; whether you’re a barleywine aficionado or just started your exploration of beer; we invite you to join us for the 21st Hardliver Barleywine Festival on February 25th & 26th 2023.
Recognizing this Belgian-inspired (and Belgian-owned) spot in Fremont is celebrating their 21st Hard Liver, the spot is serving up some 30+ barleywines, some squirreled away for years, others just recently birthed by the breweries that are taking part. With styles ranging from the classic, stainless steel aged to the organic barrel-aged, there is a wide-berth of beers to see and try!
So we thought, rather than just copy-paste a bulleted list from here, why not do something original and inviting? Which is why we reached out the breweries and with (most of their permissions) we sourced images, description, and of course alcohol by volume, to give you a complete breakdown of what's featured Brouwer's Cafe! Notably, there were some who had better things to do, like stay in business, than respond with less than 3 days notice. But to be fair, we weren't given much notice either!
How's this broken down?
Starting with vintage, we have listed every beer at Brouwer's Cafe that is more than a few years old in the Vintage section. Then, as the 'Cafe likes to organize their menus, we are breaking the younger barleywines down by state (or region if there is only one). Naturally, we encourage you to select the logo, if you want a deeper dive into the beer, including a reference to (most of) the breweries.
And, that's it!
No, best of the list. No, our picks! Just scroll, select, select back button (or the helpful text within the profile), and be responsible in your drink choices and how you get home! Oh, and if you need some food, psssst, https://www.brouwerscafe.com/menu/.
Have a fun Hard Liver Barleywine Festival and congrats to Brouwer's Cafe on their 21st edition of this unique event!

ith a rich amber hue and a mild fruit forward aroma, our American-style Barleywine begins with a bold kick. A robust malt profile of caramel, light fruit, and biscuits marry with heaps of Pacific Northwest hops for balance. It finishes with a refined warming glow. It's great fresh but will certainly age with grace

Confoundingly unpronounceable yet eminently drinkable—welcome to §ucaba, an epic barrel-aged English barley wine whose original name was undone by a two-bit legal challenge. Big, boozy bourbon and American oak aromas combine with soft chocolate malty undertones. Complex malt flavors are framed in oak with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla, tobacco, coconut and just a touch of dark cherry. §ucaba is built to last and can age for years to come (we recommend counting the years with an abacus).

Old Foghorn® is brewed based on historic English barleywine methods. It is highly hopped, fermented with a true top-fermenting ale yeast, carbonated by a natural process called "bunging" to produce champagne-like bubbles, and dry-hopped with additional Cascade hops while it ages in our cellars. Made only from “first wort,” the rich first runnings of an all-malt mash, three mashes are required to produce just one barleywine brew.
Introduced in 1975, Old Foghorn® Ale was the first modern American barleywine sparking renewed interest domestically and in Britain. The name was derived from the English tradition of attaching the word “old” to barleywines to denote their tradition, intensive brewing process and cellar aging, and “Foghorn” gave it a San Francisco flair. Today, Old Foghorn® Ale is best enjoyed sipped after a meal.

Anticipated throughout the fall and released on December 1st each year, Old Wooly is Big Time's biggest and rarest beer. It is always powerfully malty with a prodigious amount of hops for balance. In addition to Northwestern 2-row pale malt, English Crystal, Munich, Carastan malts are used along with just a touch of roasted barley for a slight dryness and additional color. Old Wooly is bittered with Yakima Nugget hops and finished with Cascade and Centennial. Only seven barrels of Old Wooly are brewed each year in late June. The beer is aged in our cellar until the 1st of December and then put on tap at the pub until it's gone.

Beyond Spacetime, Beyond Self is an English-Style Barleywine made with our friends from Cellarmaker Brewing Co. in Oakland, CA. Brewed with Two-Row and an array of specialty dark malts, it was aged in a variety of Kentucky bourbon barrels for 15 months.
Back in October of 2021, Connor and Tim came out to Seattle for a visit and, using one of their tried and true grain bills, we made a big English-Style Barleywine that ended up in a variety of super cool Kentucky Bourbon barrels. The Cellarmaker BA you game is not to be missed, and these guys are making some absolutely killer stuff along with their already awesome offerings. We are thrilled with how it turned out and hope you enjoy this mind melting Barleywine.

To the Point" is a 12.4% English-style barleywine aged in Willet bourbon barrels for for 6 and 18 months before blending and bottling. The residual sweetness adds weight to the vanilla & caramel notes from the barrel and mellows the alcohol heat as the beer nears ambient temperature. We recommend drinking this beer at 55ºF to 65ºF for the best experience.

If you tried the stainless Chuckanut Barleywine you’ll definitely want to try the Barrel Aged for another taste treat. It’s quite different due to the whiskey barrel’s flavors and alcohols. In the barrel the Barleywine has taken on some of the oak, deepened stone fruit flavors and additional ABV (the Barrel Aged Barleywine is 10.8%ABV as opposed to 10.3% for regular Barleywine). This higher ABV adds more depth and richness to an already rich ale. The hops only help to balance out the caramel and toffee sweetness inherent in the maltiness of the barleywine. Lots of rich wine (portlike) flavors abound. This is a beer for sipping and should be served in stemmed glassware for a complete experience.

Nineteen hours of double mashing, over 4 hours boiling, parking lot sleeping and bourbon barrel aging; all for the love of the craft! The North Fork Brewery needs little introduction. Known as a place of pilgrimage, being devoted to beer for over 20 years, it is befitting of a shrine. Together we brewed a beer with more Golden Promise and Maris Otter malt than we deserved to mash all day! An over 4-hour boil saw some East Kent Goldings hops, just for good measure. Then, fermented with a blend of English ale strains and aged for over 12 months in fresh and spent Heaven Hills bourbon barrels. This beer is rich, bright and just barely balanced!

Our first Barleywine release is an exploration of decadent and complex malt and barrel character. This multi-year endeavor employed bourbon and maple syrup barrels, with stock aged for 12 and 18 months. The resulting blend boasts indulgent aromas and rich flavors of chocolate, dark fruit, toffee, and caramel. Warming bourbon and subtle maple sweep in, adding depth and nuance.--

Brewed with our friends at Brouwer's Cafe and Virgil Gamache Farms for the annual Hardliver Barleywine Festival. Amarillo and Chinook hops lend bitterness and aromatics while four types of malt (including a touch of rye) and a four-hour boil provide lots of beautiful color and flavor as well as the high level of alcohol we wanted to achieve.

We’ve been anxiously awaiting the return of Maestro since our 2021 vintage sold out and are pleased to say that this fourth vintage of our beloved English-style barleywine may be our finest to date! Aged in freshly emptied Heaven Hill bourbon barrels, we love the expression of bourbon and oak in this rich and decadent beer. Begin your experience with scintillating aromas of toffee, vanilla, and spice, before diving headfirst into a luscious liquid caramel that evolves as it warms in your glass. As with past vintages of Maestro, we believe this beer will age gracefully, so put one aside to drink in another 6 months or a year… if you’ve got the will power to save it!

Since the beginning of time, people have slightly misinterpreted and reinterpreted each others words… and beers. The study of words’ original intentions has always been a thing - see Yaska,Sanskrit Grammarian circa 7th Century BCE. Same with beer. Which leads us to the question - what exactly is a barleywine? Etymology is a blend of two very different but equally delicious variations of barleywine. One a rich, toasty, black barleywine (Etym) and the other a classic, 12 month barrel aged American style (Ology). After months of study and reflection, we blended the two with a third, younger American barleywine to create this bold and balanced beer.

Bigfoot is a beast of a beer, brimming with bold flavors of bittersweet malt and heaps of aggressive whole-cone Pacific Northwest hops. First introduced in the winter of 1983, Bigfoot is a cult-classic beer brewed in the barleywine style, meaning a strong, robust, bruiser of a beer with the refined intensity of a wine. Bigfoot is prized by beer collectors for its supreme cellarability. Under the proper conditions, it can age like a fine wine, developing new flavors and character as it matures in the bottle. Each new release or “expedition” is vintage dated. Collect your own and see the flavors develop and progress.
From the brewery’s private library. Extended aging of Bigfoot refines some of the barleywine’s notoriously bold character. Famous for its aggressive hoppiness, vintage Bigfoot gains more subtlety over time. As the hops fade to the background, the robust malts take over and notes of brandied cherries, dates, cocoa, leaf tobacco and caramel come to the fore. Over time, Bigfoot becomes less of a beast and more of a beauty, suitable for serving as an after-dinner drink in your favorite cordial glass or snifter.
