Available this Thursday, Hellbent Brewing Company and Boon Boona coffee invite you to sip on the latest edition of Moon Tower Stout

Stouts. For the uninitiated, brewers have often been described as having notes of dark chocolate, cacao nibs, or coffee. This isn’t because the beer in question contains these things. Rather, this is the side-effect of the human mind providing a solution to what flavors and aromas it produces when one combines certain grains and hops, with the right yeast, to produce a stout.

But lately, brewers have sought to provide a stronger sensory load, by adding coffee or cacao nibs, to their beer further blurring the lines between chocolate, coffee, and beer. With Seattle brewery, Hellbent, the brewers have sought to create a stout that derives aroma and flavor from including coffee beans. But they didn’t have far to travel for coffee.

With a previous relationship, the roasters at Boon Boona Coffee were the perfect for this brewery along Lake City Way. Previously, Hellbent and Boon Boona collaborated, along with Métier Brewing Company and artist Perri Rhoden, to support the “Black Is Beautiful” campaign for social justice and equality.

When our production team wanted to add coffee to our customer-favorite Moon Tower Stout, we instantly thought of our friends and previous collaborators at Boon Boona Coffee. Head Brewer/Owner Brian Young and our Customer Experience Coordinator (proud “beer nerd” and former Coffee Master) Dani Dutro worked directly with Boon Boona’s CEO/Founder Efrem Fesaha, Director of Coffee Ali Güldüren, and Lead Roaster Alex Carlson (home brewer) to find the perfect coffee to add to our stout.

Several coffee tastings later, the team settled on Owemba, which showcased notes of sweet chocolate during the cold brew process. Paired with Hellbent Brewing Company’s Moon Tower Stout, Owemba complimented a beer that inspired notes of mild roasted coffee and toasted caramel, resulting in a beer that medium-bodied, dry, smooth, and the perfect “breakfast beer”.

Both Hellbent Brewing Company and Boon Boona hope you will stop by, enjoy a pint or four-pack, come February 25th, and start a conversation inspired by Moon Tower Stout and the collaborative effort between two like-minded businesses.

Find this new collaboration at our locations, come talk coffee and beer with us! Despite the difficulties that the pandemic has brought both our industries, Hellbent & Boon Boona remain dedicated to providing spaces for community, conversation, and the enjoyment of handcrafted beverages with friends. We’re excited to share and celebrate Boon Boona’s upcoming expansion to Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood! Stay tuned to their social for details - cheers!

About Hellbent Brewing Company

Hellbent started with three of us – Jack Guinn, Chris Giles and Randy Embernate – longtime friends and restaurant industry veterans. For us, starting Hellbent was the natural (and the coolest) thing to do, growing directly out of our experience and our love of beer. For years we home-brewed and toiled over our business plan. Then, we met Brian Young – award winning brewer, co-owner and fast friend – who turned out to be the missing link. Within a couple months, we were on the hunt for the perfect location.

We wanted our brewery in Lake City, where Chris and Jack already called home, to contribute to the growing beer scene here. When we stepped into the old CM Hopkins building for the first time, we knew we had found our venue. Starting right away, we gutted it and began the transformation, building with reclaimed wood, steel, good humor, and a fair amount of muscle.

Finally, after years of fierce determination and hard work (including seven months of construction), we opened our doors in the thick of microbrew country. We didn’t do this alone. We are humbled by the support and kindness of our friends and family that helped us along the way. So, to our beer-loving brothers and sisters of the Pacific Northwest, cheers and welcome to Hellbent!
