Oregon's Von Ebert's Brewing releases a public-domain Pilsner, 33 Stars, to support the Wildfire Response and Recovery Fund.

If you’re like the countless Oregonians, who suffered through some of the worst breathing conditions in decades, then you have some appreciation for the importance of clear air. The result of wildfires in Oregon and California, Oregon’s cities and towns endured near blackout conditions, with photos more compared with science fiction films than an evergreen escape. Through it all, restaurants and bars had to close their outdoor spaces, resulting in further financial losses on top of those endured during this global pandemic. One of those businesses, seeing an opportunity to learn from the recent air quality issues, is releasing a beer.

It’s called “33 Stars” and it’s a beer with a purpose to generate money towards Wildfire Response and Recovery Fund via the United Way of the Columbia-Willamette.

Right now Oregon is experiencing the worst fire season in recorded history,” explained Tom S. Cook, owner of Von Ebert Brewing. “More than half a million Oregonians have been displaced and many of them will lose everything. We wanted to do something to bring the beer community together to help these people who are facing unexpected challenges.

Brewed to be a Pilsner, 33 Stars isn’t just a fundraising beer from one brewery. It’s a beer whose recipe is publicly available to any brewery interested in releasing and supporting Von Ebert’s efforts, by brewing this beer and donating proceeds to Wildfire Response and Recovery Fund. Or as the brewery puts it.

The brewery asks that participating breweries, as well as bars selling the beer on draft, donate at least $1 per pint or can sold to one of the 14 United Way chapters throughout Oregon.

Also, as 33 Stars is a Pilsner made with all-Oregon ingredients, the brewery asks that interested breweries support Oregon partners by sourcing ingredients from the state.

More on 33 Stars Oregon

Von Ebert brewed 33 Stars as an ode to Oregon and the state’s rich agriculture that supplied the ingredients for the beer. All of the beer’s malts and hops were grown at Goschie Farms in Silverton, Oregon. The beer’s name comes from the 33 stars that adorn the state’s flag, recognizing its status as the 33rd state to join the Union.

“This is such a great state - the people, farms, businesses, landscape, wildlife,” continued Cook. “All of those attributes that make it such a great state are being impacted by the wildfires. We couldn’t think of a better way to help the state than brewing a beer that honors and celebrates its rich agriculture. We hope all participating breweries go a similar route, choosing as many Oregon-grown ingredients as possible.”

Previously available on draft, 33 Stars is now available in 16-ounce, 4-packs, at both locations.
