Peaks & Pints during Tacoma Beer Week presents the "Pacific Northwest Cider Invitational"

People all over the greater Tacoma area will get to raise their glass to support local business and craft beer in a week-long celebration: Tacoma Beer Week is back. This year’s event will look different due to the ongoing COVID-19 precautions. There are still events going on. They’re just smaller scale. Everything that’s going on is smaller scale, not the packed rooms we used to see. Masks, social distancing, and outdoor seating is also encouraged.

Peaks & Pints craft beer bar, bottle shop and restaurant has lined up four events this year, including a Tacoma Beer Week Opening Day celebration with Tacoma News Tribune Metro News columnist Matt Driscoll and his Blown Deadline IPA that he and the staffs and Peaks & Pints and CaskCades brewed at E9 Brewing in Tacoma’s History Brewery District.

Dune Night at Peaks and Pints

Press Release

Hey Tacoma GeekMoms and GeekDads! There is plenty of summer vacation season left on the calendar, and boredom may already be settling in around your house. So what are some fun, geeky places to take your geeklets? Dune Peninsula should top your list. The 11-acre park, aptly named for the environmental-themed, sci-fi novel “Dune,” written by Tacoma native Frank Herbert, is in your backyard! Just don’t schedule your other geeky excursions during Tacoma Beer Week Aug. 11-17. Peaks and Pints will host a Dune SudsPop Wednesday, Aug. 14 starring the man who championed Dune Peninsula, sci-fi author and Metro Park Board Commissioner Erik Hanberg, with music by hometown musician Doug Mackey, who grew up in the shadow of Dune Peninsula’s former occupant, the ASARCO smelter. Toss in Tacoma’s historical brewery, Pacific Brewing & Malting Co., and you can’t get more Tacoma than Peaks and Pints Tacoma Beer Week Dune Night.

For the past year, Peaks and Pints has hosted SudsPop nights pairing a brewer, an exclusive one-off beer brewed by the special guest brewer and a chosen artist or band in our East Wing events room. The Tacoma Beer Week Dune SudsPop will be the first time the host isn’t a brewer, although Pacific Brewing brewers will be in the house.

“The theme in ‘Dune’ of a world destroyed by environmental catastrophe drew in part from Frank Herbert’s life experiences in Tacoma, which in the 1950s was one of the nation’s most polluted cities,” said Park Board Commissioner Erik Hanberg, in a media release. “The characters in the novel have a goal to ‘terraform’ their planet back to its inhabitable origins. That’s what we’ve done here. We have terraformed a polluted wasteland into a beautiful environment for all to enjoy.”

Did Hanberg envision the Frank Herbert Trail that loops around the Peninsula when he hosted “Cocktails Through a Stillsuit: A Toast to Frank Herbert” at the former Hilltop Kitchen in 2013? Were the Dune Peninsula six slides that lead down to a marina complex part of Hanberg’s presentations to Rotary clubs in 2014? Did he have plans for Dune Peninsula’s ginormous lawn when he was named “Best Tacoman” in the Weekly Volcano’s 2014 Best of Tacoma issue? These are just a few of the many things you’ll discover while sipping Pacific craft beer Aug. 14 at Peaks and Pints.

Hanberg won’t be the only human with stories to tell during Peaks and Pints Dune SudsPop Aug. 14. Mackey, an equity actor, screenplay writer, former Weekly Volcano columnist, former Museum of Glass emcee, artist, songwriter, band member and sound engineer — including co-founder and sound engineer of the Channel 253 podcast hub with Hanberg and Marguerite Martin — has seen a thing or two. The singer/songwriter will, no doubt, sprinkle Tacoma stories between his songs.

Peaks and Pints promises not to re-create the foul smoke environment that plagued Herbert’s Tacoma neighborhood, nor allow vicious sandworms depicted in “Dune” to invade our cozy SudsPop event room. We do promise an enjoyable night of Tacoma stories, Tacoma grown music and Tacoma made beer. Cheers!

PEAKS AND PINTS TACOMA BEER WEEK DUNE NIGHT, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, Peaks and Pints, 3816 N. 26th St., Basecamp Proctor, Tacoma, $14 RSVP at our bar for first 20 people.

As part of this year's PDX Beer Week festivities, we are working with StormBreaker Brewing to host the third annual Beer Quest and Mini Beer Fest! This will be a casual but competitive beer "quest" involving many of the North Portland area breweries.

Participating breweries coming soon!

Starting at 10:00 am, you will make your way to each of the participating breweries to get a hole punch in your beer quest card. There is no set route, so how you get there is up to you! Run/bike/walk/unicycle/pogo stick, doesn't matter. (Just make sure you get your cards punched by 11:15.)

Miles covered will be roughly a 5K. Once you get your card filled out, head back to StormBreaker and redeem your beer quest card to get tasters for the beer fest. Each hole punch is redeemable for one 4 oz pour of that brewery's beer. Gain points along the way to become the Beer Quest Champ!

Ticket includes entry, event taster glass, 8 taster tix, event T-shirt, live music and tons of fun!

10% of our proceeds help support our nonprofit partners, the Oregon Brewshed Alliance, Dollar For Portland, and Life Vest Inside.

Registration is limited, so sign up today!

About the Run
We like to keep things relaxed so this may be different than other “races” you’ve done. We don't keep track of your finish time, and you won’t get a medal when you finish. Instead of closing down the streets, we ensure a safe and fun running route on sidewalks, through parks, and along trails!

Course details are coming soon!

Event Day Details

Please arrive 30 minutes before the start to get checked-in.

Bring a valid ID. You do not need to be 21 to enjoy the event, but must be 21 to enjoy the beer. (Registered, underage participants receive a complimentary non-alcoholic beverage).

There will not be a bag check; please plan accordingly.

The course is open, meaning roads will not be closed. You are responsible for obeying all traffic laws and regulations.

We run rain or shine! Dress appropriately for the weather.

Bring extra money if you want to purchase food, more beer, or any of our great Oregon Brewery Running Series merchandise!

Please drink responsibly!

Parking
Parking is a little tricky at StormBreaker. Arrive a few minutes early and look for spots in the surrounding neighborhood. Public transportation may also be a good option, depending on where you live. We always encourage carpooling and safe, designated drivers.

Look for our informational email closer to the event. We will remind you of these details and share anything else you might need to know.

Cheers!

About StormBreaker Brewing

Hood breaks storms coming off the Pacific Ocean, head on with intensity. Whether you are looking for big hoppy IPA like Cloud Ripper, a fruity lighter option like When I Froot..., a pale ale that is Right as Rain, or pretty much any style, we've got you covered. We love our pub on Mississippi Avenue and meeting everyone that comes in! Welcome to StormBreaker Brewing, winner of an unknown amount of 4th place finishes at many a beer competitions and a gold here and there."

About the Oregon Brewery Running Series

Vancouver Craft Beer Week Festival at PNE Fairgrounds

Press Release

Vancouver, B.C., May 14, 2019—Celebrating 10 years of craft beer and craft beer culture, the most anticipated craft beer and cider festival in Western Canada returns to the PNE Fairgrounds June 8 and 9, 2019, for a full weekend of live music, food, art, craft beer and cider, games and good times. The 10th annual Vancouver Craft Beer Week Festival (VCBW) caps off a 10-day citywide celebration of craft beer culture and community, running May 31 through June 9. For a complete list of VCBW citywide events including VCBW’s 10th Anniversary Kickoff Party on May 31, visitVancouverCraftBeerWeek.com.

In the spring of 2010, just after the completion of the most successful Winter Olympic Games in history, a few craft beer enthusiasts gathered around a table over a pint and a timely idea: to create a week-long festival to showcase “real beer”—and so, the first Vancouver Craft Beer Week was born. The first VCBW Festival started at a small venue (Heritage Hall on Main Street), hosting about 100 beer aficionados and 15 breweries. Now, a decade later, the city-wide celebration lasts 10 days, with more than 50,000 people taking part in dozens of events across the city—including 15,000 people at the annual VCBW Festival at the historic PNE Fairgrounds—all honouring the province’s favourite commodity.

VCBW 2019 Festival highlights:

• 100 + breweries and cideries pouring more than 300 beers and ciders

• Festivalgoers can create a list of must-try breweries and favourite standout beers in advance through the VCBW website

• An incredible lineup of food trucks and food purveyors including local favourites DownLow Chicken Shack and Big Day BBQ

• BC Ale Trail-er pouring 10 craft breweries from the furthest reaches of B.C.’s Ale Trail

• BC Farm Crafted Cider Association’s cider row featuring a variety of cideries from across the province

• United States Brewers Association has chosen the VCBW as their exclusive Canadian festival partner four years in a row. They are crossing the border to present 20+ breweries and 40+ beers, many of which have never been poured in Canada

• Live interactive painting with the Vancouver Mural Festival

• Go RV’ing presents a camp style lounge outfitted with one of their popular retro trailers

• VIP Section catered and presented by Whole Foods Market

• The BC Lions will have two players onsite hosting a football toss on the Saturday, and two members from the Felions Dance Team on Sunday

• No stress transportation to the festival with dedicated Evo valet parking (attendees must plan an alternative safe ride home)

• Live music lineup includes BBCampfire ShitkickersDead SoftEleven TwelvesFoxy MoronRain Citythe Spillionairesthe TanglersWoodheadMark Woodyard & FriendsVinyl Ritchie, Young Friend, plus the Carnival Band, Hip Hop Tricycle, DJ Sheldon Knight and DJ Hebegebe.

VCBW is committed to providing a safe space for all genders, ethnicities, abilities and sexual orientations to enjoy and ensuring that craft beer is promoted and appreciated responsibly by adults. All volunteers, staff, and attendees should enjoy their experience free from harassment, assault or intimidation—any such behaviour will not be tolerated. As with all VCBW events, Serving It Right rules apply—attendees must be 19+ years of age and provide two pieces of ID. VCBW guests are reminded to drink responsibly and plan a safe ride home.

Rhein Haus opens for Brunch at 11 a.m. so racers can feel free to enjoy a hearty breakfast and beer before the run begins! In addition to the Beer Week Fun Run t-shirt, registration also includes bag check at Rhein Haus (bags will be kept safely at Rhein Haus, but will not be transported to Stoup) and a $10 Lyft credit to help you get to or from Rhein Haus or Stoup along with $1 off beers at Rhein Haus and Stoup.

Coffee Beer & Donuts at Reuben's Brews' The Taproom

Our favorite way to close out yet another amazing Seattle Beer Week is with Coffee Beer & Donuts. We're pairing mini donuts from Mighty-O Donuts with a quartet of our coffee-infused beers. It's a breakfast made in SBW heaven.

The space behind the brewery will be open, so bring your friends and family along for the fun!
