PORTLAND, Ore. … Von Ebert Brewing, winner of the 2021 Oregon Beer Awards’ Medium Size Brewery of the Year, will be releasing four new draft-only IPAs to kick off the new year.

Mirror Neuron is an 8.5% imperial IPA produced by Von Ebert in collaboration with Eugene, OR based Oakshire Brewing.

“Earlier this year, we brewed an IPA with Oakshire in Eugene also called Mirror Neuron,” explained Eric Ebel, Lead Brewer, Von Ebert Pearl. “Our goal was to bring together hop varietals from all around the world and create a complex IPA that pushed hop utilization to the limit, while also using several different styles of hop products together. With this version of Mirror Neuron, we created an imperial version of that original beer, this time at our Pearl facility. I like to say it’s like the Frankenstein’s monster version.”

The Von Ebert edition of Mirror Neuron used seven different hops from around the world: Mosaic and El Dorado from North America; Barbe Rouge, Hallertau Blanc, and Styrian Wolf from Europe; and Nelson Sauvin and Enigma from Australasia. This combination of hops lends flavors and aromas of resin, blackberry, strawberry, and diesel to the beer.

Lasting Friendships is a 6% ABV cold IPA collaboration with Caps N’ Taps in Camas, WA.

“I highly recommend Caps N’ Taps,” exclaimed Ebel. “It’s a cozy little joint just across the river from Portland that sells draft and bottled beer. Owners Michelle and Eric Vantassel know how to curate a great tap list. They were interested in exploring the realm of cold IPA, and so were we, so we took this collab in that direction. Michelle and Eric came by for the brew day, so we put them to work.”

A cold IPA is an IPA fermented with a lager yeast strain, which ferments at a lower temperature than ales, creating a crisper IPA than the usual fermentation process. Columbus, Simcoe, and Nelson Sauvin hops were used in Lasting Friendships, helping to give it dank, pine, and white wine flavors and aromas that mesh with a dry, medium bitterness and light body.

Sleep Mask is a draft-only hazy IPA containing ADHA 218, El Dorado, and Nelson Sauvin hops. The 7.1% ABV beer has flavors and aromas of mango, orange marmalade, and gooseberry.

Wave Decay is a San Diego-inspired West Coast IPA available only on draft. The 6.6% ABV beer used Simcoe and Columbus hops, as well as Columbus CO2 extract. It finishes dry and moderately bitter with classic West Coast IPA flavors and aromas of pine, resin, and grapefruit.

Sleep Mask and Wave Decay are on tap now at both the Von Ebert Glendoveer and Pearl brewpubs. Mirror Neuron will debut at the Pearl on Friday, with a Glendoveer tap line coming soon after. Lasting Friendships will appear at the Pearl on Friday, January 21, followed by an introduction at the Pearl the next week.
