Made to honor brewery friend and lover of IPAs, Stüber Tuff, Von Ebert releases Stüber Tuff.

Press Release

PORTLAND, Ore. … Von Ebert Brewing will release a beer today to bring awareness to the mission of Lines for Life, a Portland-based non-profit focused on substance abuse and suicide prevention.

While some may look at the use of a beer to bring awareness to substance abuse and suicide prevention, as ironic or in poor taste, Von Ebert owner Tom S. Cook takes a different perspective.

“As a brewery, it’s our responsibility to talk about things like substance abuse,” explained Cook. “While beer offers a lot of positives, we can’t be oblivious and think it’s all positive. It’s on us as a brewery to talk about not just drinking responsibly, but also paying attention to friends and family, recognizing warning signs, and knowing when and how to step in and offer help. My family has been a longtime supporter of Lines for Life, so I jumped at the opportunity to help them at an even deeper level.”

The beer, named Stüber Tuff, is an IPA dedicated to the memory of Stuart Wells, an IPA lover and friend of the brewery whose life was taken prematurely nine years ago from melanoma.

“When we first discussed this collaboration with the Von Ebert team, they asked if we had any ideas for a meaningful name that would honor the reasons we decided to make the beer,” explained Dwight Holton, CEO of Lines for Life. “A name inspired by the life and memory of Stu immediately came to mind. He was a connection point for so many of us associated with Lines for Life and Von Ebert that we were inspired to bring Stüber Tuff into the world as a way to support Lines for Life, a beacon for those in the throes of life-threatening despair and a worthy match for Stu’s fierce, hopeful spirit.”

Wells’ network of friends spanned the country and he served as a linking point between them, connecting many who otherwise never would have met, but now have become lifelong friends. His indomitable spirit lives on in the hearts of the “Taunt Group,” the name this network of close friends has taken to collectively calling itself.

The word “Tuff,” used in the beer’s name, is a sort of neologism created by the Taunt Group. Spelled incorrectly, it means the very things Wells exemplified: courage and grace, tenacity and optimism, a fighting and generous spirit. He never fell short of being Tuff.

Von Ebert Head Brewer Sam Pecoraro described the hop selection for Stüber Tuff.

“We brewed a clean, dry and moderately bitter 6.6% ABV IPA with a very heavy dose of Simcoe and Columbus hops,” said Pecoraro. “The Simcoe are the same lot that we use in Volatile Substance - grapefruit and pine forward - while the Columbus from our friends at Roy Farms in Washington bring more resin and low levels of tropical fruit.”

Stüber Tuff will be available at both Von Ebert pub locations, Glendoveer and the Pearl, on draft and in 16oz. four-packs beginning today.
