Get to know Seattle's Fair Isle Brewing by enjoying Tove, Farmhouse with Blackberries, or Ana, a Saison with Kiwi fruit.

Weathering the storm of inconvenience amongst financial depression, Ballard’s recently opened Fair Isle Brewing is supporting you during this unique period in history.

It starts with supporting takeout and delivery options, and it continues with ongoing releases from their warehouse and brewery. Two of those examples of riding the tsunami of financial instability is the recently announced Tove and Ana.

Dry with a hint of fruit sweetness, Tove has unmistakable blackberry notes evocative of the hard candy your grandmother would have eaten.

Announced and released earlier this month, Tove is the breweries first “fruited” farmhouse ale, providing an exhibition of balance between the succulent blackberries of Snohomish, Skagit Valley Malts, and Yakima Valley hops.

Starting with their signature, Farmhouse, ale, Fair Isle ages this delicate beer for 3 months before transferring into a (single) oak puncheon. While resting in oak, Tove is guided along its fermented journey by blackberries from Hima Nursery and Farms, in Snohomish (Washington). Resting away from August 2019, until early 2020, Tove is now available, in 375ml bottles, today.

Following up on the release of Tove, Fair Isle has recently announced their latest Saison in Ana. Fermented with Ananasnaya Kiwi fruit, Ana is the “sister” to another Fair Isle beer - Cheri. Brewed to be a tropical Saison, Ana takes a unique approach to fermenting by adding crushed kiwi 48 hours before the start fermentation.

During a long day, the brewers deposited, hand-crushed, Ananasnaya Kiwi, into an empty fermenter. Resting alone, with only the sugars, moisture and natural bacteria to keep it company, the Ananasnaya Kiwi would get a “head start” before the brewery’s proprietary yeast, took over and married both the recently brewed Saison and fruit together.

Now available in 375 ml or 750 ml bottles, the brewery took time to share their impressions of Ana.

The subtle mineral aroma of Ana is closely followed by notes of Pippin green apples, white grape skins, melon rind and bursts with tropical notes and bright acidity. Dry like our other saisons, but with a perceived sweetness coming from the kiwi, Ana stands apart.

About Fair Isle Brewing

Pivotal experiences are not easy to come by and at Fair Isle, the goal is to provide you with a connection to beer like you’ve never experienced. We are a brewery in the Ballard Neighborhood of Seattle creating farmhouse beers rooted in the Pacific Northwest.

Fair Isle will produce farmhouse and wild beers such as tart Saisons and American Wild Ales.  Farmhouse beer originated before the industrial revolution when beer was not yet produced with laboratory isolated and tightly controlled commercial yeasts, as is common today.  Instead, beer was naturally fermented with wild yeasts and bacteria. Because the yeast cultures were locally and naturally occuring, the beers were unique to each specific brewery’s location, creating flavors representing a specific place and time.

Today, farmhouse beer doesn't have to be brewed on a farm; its more about a mindset and respect for its origins.  It’s about embracing variation rather than avoiding it. We like to think of ourselves as shepherds rather than controllers - giving our fermentation cultures the time they need to make great beer.
