If one looks up the dictionary for the word primordial, they will find something that sounds ancestral, prehistoric, and other terms to describe something as old as time. For the men and women of Mother Earth Brewing Company, Primordial represents a beer that remains prescient in the thoughts and memories of its crew and loyal customers. It’s also a beer that is making its return, once again, as we enter the homestretch of August.

Brewed as greeter, to anyone who’s ever visited or indulged in a can or pint of Mother Earth beer, Primordial Imperial India Pale Ale, remains a beer which has birthed many progeny from the man wombs secure in the brewery. If you’ve heard of Big Mother, released in the Spring, then you know the influence this beer has.

But like all things, you grow with the times, lest you become, well, history.

Recognizing this Mother Earth’s Marketing ‘wizard’, Kamron Khannakhjavani, had this to share regarding the upgrades to Primordial.

Craft beer drinkers’ often express variety in their tastes through their purchasing decisions, so going into a release we are always looking at what is popular or inspiring and then making adjustments to existing recipes accordingly. Availability of certain hops is also a consideration and often the main driver for a recipe change in a style like this.”

In technical terms, Primordial will incorporate more citrus hops, and an updated malt bill to include wheat and oats. The result is a beer that will have a bigger body and head retention, resulting in a joyful IIPA, without increasing the amount of malt needed. Besides ingredients, Brewery ‘god’ Chris Baker, is changing things up by using hops in the “hot” and “cold” sides, resulting in a beer that hopped on its way to the fermenter, and dry-hopped in the fermenter. As Chris puts it.

Reinventing a brand like primordial is more than just changing the color or just throwing in a different hop varietal. There is a lot that goes into it.

Available in draft and 16-ounce, four packs, look for Mother Earth’s retooled Primordial Imperial IPA, this week. If you aren’t sure where to go, visit findmotherearthbrewing.com, for more information.
