B & D Farms

About B & D Farms

Ben and Dave Smith are part of the fifth generation of a hop-growing family rooted in the sandy loam along the Willamette River. They grew up moving pipe, driving tractor, and generally helping out during harvest on their father’s farm. Ben and Dave knew from an early age that they wanted to continue this legacy.

The Smith brothers founded B&D Farms in 1984 and situated it in the heart of the Willamette Valley. Beginning with 15 acres of hops in addition to row crops, grass seed, wheat, and clover, they have steadily grown over several decades to expand their operation to 1000 acres under nine different varieties.

Both Ben and Dave hope that their own sons will someday take over what they’ve worked so hard to build and continue to improve it for the future.

Indie Hops Flavor Project

About Indie Hops Flavor Project

In 2008, the hop industry didn’t give much thought to craft breweries. Global brewing companies dominated beer markets, and even craft breweries were largely fueled by hop scraps that fell from global brewery selection tables.

We were in Oregon, and craft breweries had already become important to most communities here. It felt like a cultural movement, and state by state protectionist laws were faltering under the will of the people. Craft would spread, we believed, and they’d need their own hops.

Roger majored in law at UT in Austin, with a minor in Shiner Bock. Jim majored in Anchor Steam at Stanford, with a minor in Economics. In the ’70s, we were snot-nosed kids in Corvallis, Oregon sneaking into Oregon State events and running from the campus police. Was it possible that we could supply Oregon hops to the craft beer industry, and maybe even get OSU involved? We had the combined experience and resources to give it a go, so we did.

We took three major steps in the very beginning:

  • We struck an agreement with OSU where we funded a hop breeding and research effort that would feed new genetic material into our own hop development program.

  • We also built Oregon’s first hop pellet mill, engineered for the craft market.

  • We established relationships with two outstanding Oregon hop growers.

And so we set out to be hop suppliers to craft breweries.

Sodbuster Farms

About Sodbuster Farms

It’s important to know where our food comes from. More than quality, we expect ecological sustainability and connection to community. That’s why Sodbuster Farms grows only the finest Northwest hops, responsibly harvested by farmers who have been perfecting the practice for generations.

The Willamette Valley of Oregon is our home, rich with hop growing history. Our family farm is owned and operated by Doug Weathers and his wife Audrey, who are joined by their daughter Erica, her husband Jacob, and three grandchildren. There are now four generations on the farm.

We’re committed to quality and environmentally-friendly practices—that’s why we are the largest hops farm in Oregon certified Salmon-Safe©. This ensures that our land will remain beautiful and productive into the future.

Local beer is important to us, so we grow more than fourteen different varieties of aromatic and bittering hops for the vibrant craft brew industry. We also contribute to more than twenty different regional “fresh hop” beers annually.

So the next time you pick up your favorite brew made with hops from Sodbuster Farms, remember that it’s a product of generations of quality and sustainable farming practices, and a commitment to the community in which we grow.

About Coleman AG

In the spring of 1847, James and Frances Coleman and their infant daughter, Anna, left Iowa for good as they ventured westward on the Oregon Trail in search of opportunity.

Guided by grit, determination, and an unwavering sense of purpose, the Coleman family weathered the journey and made it to the western edge of the Oregon territory. The Coleman family was one of the first to settle at the St. Paul Mission and it wasn’t long before these pioneers put the plow to earth and began building their legacy.

B & C Hop Farms

About 3D Farm & BC Farm

Bruce, Bill and Charlie Davidson are the proud owners and fourth generation hop farmers of 3D Farm and BC Hop Farm Ltd. Their family farming operations began in the 1940s when their father, Jim Davidson, purchased 100 acres of farmland in the Willamette Valley and planted 10 acres of hops, all of which had to be hand-picked. In 1975, Jim purchased the first Dauenhauer picking machine along with three dryers and a Gasseling layer and baler. Working alongside their father, the three brothers purchased the farm in 1983 and continued to expand operations. In 1995, 3D Farm expanded to its current facility with two Dauenhauer machines, seven dryers, and a dedicated cooling and baling room. They have now expanded their production to more than 600 acres and nine varieties.
