German brewers were onto something centuries ago when they created bold, rich bock beers for the winter. To carry on the tradition, Samuel Adams brewers created Winter Lager, a spiced wheat bock brewed with fresh ground cinnamon, ginger and orange peel. The brewers scoured the world for Winter Lager’s spices, trying dozens of cinnamons before landing on a blend from Southeast Asia. Unlike the more common varieties, this blend contains Indonesian and Vietnamese cinnamons, which offer just the right amount of warming spice to complement the beer but not overpower it.
With an alcohol content of 5.6%ABV, Winter Lager is known for its rich malt character and low bitterness, making it ideal for enjoying on cold winter nights. The lager yeast creates a smooth crispness that balances its rich malty flavor. The beer is crafted with five malts including Samuel Adams two-row pale malt blend, Caramel 60, malted wheat, Weyermann Carafa and Munich 10. The smooth maltiness is balanced by Hallertau Mittelfreuh and Spalt Spalter Noble hops.
Pairing with Food: Winter Lager’s ginger and cinnamon spice accent rich holiday dishes like duck or beef stew, and complement the spice of Thai cuisine or curry dishes. The brew’s crisp lager body and rich flavor allow it to cut through and stand up to seasonal dishes like baked brie, apple pie, carrot cake or gingerbread.
