If you ask anyone who lives in or around the Greater Portland, Greater Seattle, or other major cities of the Pacific Northwest, they will opine the experience of digging one's self out of the pearl blanket of wintery snow. Thankfully for most in the area, the meteorologists throughout the country and the area predicted our storms, long before the panic of cabin fever set it. Like the meteorologists who predict where precipitation will fall or when our skies will be clear of clouds, breweries are increasing getting better at forecasting their upcoming beers in time for those seeking something different or something comforting from their local brewery.
Reuben's Brews, a kinetic fixture in Seattle's Ballard neighborhood, has recently announced their upcoming releases for 2019 and we are taking a hard look at what this means for you, the loyal consumer.
First, we want to caution that this list is (like life) subject to change and doesn’t account for the brewery’s Crush series releases, collaborations, or one-off beers available in the taproom or in limited edition cans/draft. With that said let’s crack open a cold one and get started.
What's here to stay (*in 2019)
Like a worn pair of slippers, Reuben's Brews is pleased to confirm that yes Crikey IPA, Pilsner, Hazealicious IPA, and Robust Porter will be available all the time, all year. If something seems off, then you've probably not heard about the recent promotion of Hazealicious to the year-round lineup taking the place of Gose from 2018. Look for these four favorites in 12-ounce six-packs, select 22-ounce bottles, or on select draft wherever you buy Reuben's Brews beers.
Reuben's Brews Crikey IPA. “Crikey ipa ("Cry-key") has a hop profile led by notes of citrus, tangerine & tropical fruit with a little pine in the background. The malt backbone provides balance to every sip.”
Reuben's Brews Pilsner. Our czech-style pilsner. A clean, crisp, and bright lager with bready malt notes and spicy traditional hops.
Reuben's Brews Hazealicious IPA. Big and bright hop notes of tropical fruit, passion fruit, soft pillowy body. Restrained bitterness. Balanced.
Reuben's Brews Robust Porter. Our robust porter traces its recipe back to adam's homebrewing roots. A roasty brew with coffee and chocolate in the nose. Balanced by caramel and a medium full, malty mouthfeel with a little smoke in the finish.
What's returning (for a limited time)
Reuben's Brews Bits & Bobs IPA. Every spring we create a new beer using a variety of hops at our disposal, those "Bits & bobs" we have available. Every year a new hop profile for the season!
Reuben's Brews Summer IPA. Hop forward with citrus fruit aromas; notes of orange and grapefruit, with a medium light body and slightly bitter finish. Perfect for the long summer days.
Reuben's Brews Moreish IPA. A new entry in our seasonal IPA lineup, launching at the end of summer 2019.
Reuben's Brews Tart Cherry Weisse. … perfectly tart, and a gorgeous pink color from the tart cherries we brew this with.
Reuben's Brews Gose. Gose (“goes-uh”) is a traditional german sour ale. Once almost extinct, this beer is brewed with lactobacillus, salt and coriander to make a refreshingly crisp brew with lemon notes and a vibrant salinity.
Reuben's Brews Razzmatazz
Reuben's Brews Holiday Gose
Besides their always-on beers, Reuben's Brews is re-releasing their ever-evolving Bits & Bobs with a unique hop each year, in January; their award-winning Summer IPA in May (through August), and their new addition in Moreish IPA available September through December of 2019. Sadly, Roasted Rye didn't make the cut and is being replaced by Moreish IPA. In addition three Classic seasonals, the brewery will releases four beers as part of their new Sour series, starting with Tart Cherry Weisse. Most of these will be available on draft or 12-ounce cans, with some select few being offered in 22-ounce bottles wherever you buy Reuben's Brews beers.
By your series names combined.
Next up the brewery is happy to announce an new Small Batch series featuring 13 unique or familiarly-named beers including some from previous years as well as new additions. Like their other serieses, the brewery is retooling their lineup by moving both their Imperial Seasonal series and their Taproom Release series under one standard - the Small Batch series. Look for the following beers, including some noticeable omissions and new additions.
Reuben's Brews Gobsmacked. Peach notes in the nose with a cane sugar sweetness in support. Tangerine comes through mid-palette, with grapefruit in the finish. A smooth, soft and juicy body provides balance.
Reuben's Brews Auspicious Sons
Reuben's Brews Extant IPA (formerly known as Expat IPA).
Reuben's Brews Limoncello. … a 6% imperial gose brewed with lemon zest. Rich, lemony tart, with a hint of salinity and perfect balancing sweetness. A little taste of summer for these cool Seattle nights.
Reuben's Brews Autumn Harvest (Imperial Pumpkin)
Reuben's Brews Life on Mars. A deep red brew, with a bright nose of citrus, tangerine, and pine supported by a medium full body and smooth caramel notes. Just what the lunar lander ordered!
Reuben's Brews Blimey. An intense citrus, pine and tropical aroma are followed by a smooth medium full mouth feel. First brewed in early 2014, blimey that’s bitter has become a loved brew! Using ludicrous amounts of hops – about 6lbs per barrel – we focus on hop flavor and aroma, with 90% of these hop additions are in the last 10 minutes of the boil and later.
Reuben's Brews Mexican Lager. This tasty beer will have you dreaming of sunny beaches. Light and thirst quenching, this 4.8% lager is crisp with light malt notes, slight corn sweetness and low bitterness.
Reuben's Brews Hop Idol IPA *recipe not yet decided on.
Reuben's Brews Anniversary IPA
Reuben's Brews Day of the Dead Dark Lager
Reuben's Brews Festbier
Reuben's Brews Mole Stout. This big, rich beer has notes of chocolate spice, roast and a slight sweet heat. A big, rich stout with Peruvian single-origin cocoa nibs, vanilla beans, cinnamon, and a blend of Ancho, Guajillo and Chipotle Morita chilies.
Gone from the newly created Small Batch Series in 2019
Imperial Oatmeal Stout
Imperial Rye IPA
Look for Gobsmacked, Auspicious Sons, Extant, Limoncello, Autumn Harvest, and Life on Mars to be sold in 22-ounce bottles with the remaining seven on the list to be made available in 16-ounce, 4-packs.
Some of you in reading this might be wondering if the brewery's Crush series or collaboration beers will be released as they have in the past. We can only say that if this past 10+ weeks is any indication, you can be assured that not only will Crush beers be releasing in waves but the beers no longer in their 2019 planning will probably make a return at the taproom at some point in the near future.
