Barely a year-old, Von Ebert Brewing's "Glendover" brewery takes Gold for Obeisance, at this year's Great American Beer Festival.

Situated at 14021 N.E. Glisan (pronounced Glee-sin) Street, Von Ebert Brewing's second location opened its doors shortly after its first location in the Pearl district (at 131 NW 13th Avenue) with the goal of producing limited-edition Belgian-style ales and German-style lagers. Showcasing multiple fruit puncheons, wine foeders (pronounced food-ers), the brewery sought to stand out in a forest of ale-houses. The brewery even had its own coolship for capturing microscopic fauna in Portland's Pacific Northwest air. So far the brewery has remained a slightly-unknown destination, save for those who live or around the neighborhood.

This might change, with the brewery recently being recognized for their blended, farmhouse ale, Obeisance. Winner in the Specialty Saison category, at this year's Great American Beer Festival, this accomplishment is one of many for a brewery barely a year-old. But this is the first of many releases in the brewery's Heritage beer program.

The beer, called Obeisance, meaning deferential respect, is an homage to Upright Brewing, who is celebrating its 10-year anniversary. The beer is actually two beers that were brewed at Von Ebert’s Pearl Location. Both beers spent over a year in Oak Puncheons with Brettanomyces. They were then brought over to Glendoveer for blending and the addition of Etrog and Calamondins from Pearson Ranch in California as well as Long Pepper. Calamondins are also known as Calamansi or Philippine Lime and they are a hybrid of Kumquat and Mandarin Orange. Etrogs are a citron typically used in the Jewish celebration of Sukkot. The beer was then bottle conditioned for more than two months.

Released this past January, if there are any cases or bottles remaining at the brewery, it's safe to say they will be gone in short order. For those patient enough to purchase and keep their bottle(s) intact, now might be a good time to enjoy an award-winning Saison from one of Portland's up-and-coming breweries.
