Now in its 30th anniversary, Pike Brewing Company's XXXXX (or five X) Stout is a beer that beguiles the anti-hops consumer. At 65 International Bittering Units, XXXXX has the same amount of bitterness as a pint of Redhook Ballard Bitter or Elysian Space Dust India Pale Ale, But unlike the India Pale Ale which favors characteristics of citrus, pine, floral, or dank; Pike's award-winning stout, masks their beer's underlying characteristics with the aid of ESB, Maris Otter, and Roasted malts. Up until recently, a beer like this was only available in 22-ounce bottles and on draft at the brewery's three locations or throughout the region. All that changed with the recent announcement that the brewery is joining the growing list of breweries who have made the transition from the tried-and-true glass bottle for the lightweight, durable, 12-ounce can.
