If you are a fast-fan of India Pale Ales, then you have no doubt understand the draw of a beer that inspires thoughts of tropical beaches, a bowl of fruit, or a meadow of flowers. If there is one style of beer that is akin to wine’s red or white, india pale ales would be a distant cousin.
Over the past 30 years, Dick Cantwell has experienced his fair share of tired muscles, blistered hands, and opinionated imbibers. But that hasn’t stopped him from publishing several books, as well as germinate a reputation of being a brewer who encourages creativity even in the face of critics. Having departed from his beloved Elysian Brewing Company in 2015, Dick Cantwell set out to tour the country before starting work on his next book, Brewing Eclectic IPA: Pushing the Boundaries of India Pale Ale. As of this article that book has been published and Dick has moved onto his next project, the restoration of the famous Magnolia Brewery and Pub in San Francisco.
Which is why we are encouraging those who enjoyed Cantwell’s beers in the late 90’s at spots like Pike Brewing Company, Big Time Brewing Company, or Elysian Brewing Company; to come out and share your thoughts on his beers, his three books (namely his latest, Brewing Eclectic IPA: Pushing the Boundaries of India Pale Ale) or simply to share a conversation with one of the most interesting brewers in the past 30 years.
In addition to Dick Cantwell, there will be a book signing paired with curated India Pale Ales from both former brewery co-workers’ and those whom the Latona Pub consider supporters of the pub. Those in attendance include Cloudburst Brewing, Standard Brewing Company, Flying Bike Co-Op Brewery, Future Primitive Brewing Company, and Jellyfish Brewing.
In addition to beers, you are encouraged to arrive with a copy of “Brewing Eclectic IPA: Pushing the Boundaries of India Pale Ale” should you wish to have him sign it.
Doors open January 28th at 4 pm with Dick Cantwell, scheduled to arrive around 7 pm. Latona Pub is located at 6423 Latona Ave NE in Seattle’s Greenlake neighborhood.
