PORTLAND, Ore. (May 19, 2016 Portland Brewing is joining forces with Double Mountain Brewery to unveil the official beer of Portland Beer Week. Subcontinental IPA honors the best beer city on the planet. It’s not just for drinking, several Rose City culinary all-stars will create special treats infused with Subcontinental IPA. This one-of-a-kind collaboration brew makes its public debut during Portland Beer Week’s kick-off party on June 9.
Collaborating on a Pacific Northwest IPA was a no-brainer for head brewer Ryan Pappe (Portland Brewing) and brew master Matt Swihart (Double Mountain). The fun was incorporating their love for traditional Indian Garam Masala spiced food and beer. “Inspired by the intriguing spice blends used in Indian cuisines, we carefully added our own blend of spices to help draw out the tropical notes from the El Dorado, Calypso, Centennial and Challenger hops,” says Pappe. “I believe the spice blend we ultimately chose creates an impression that is greater than the sum of its parts,” adds Swihart.
To help bring the collaboration beer to life, the team reached out to Portland-based comic book artist, Michael Avon Oeming. “Beer labels have become their own art form lately, embracing graphic arts to give each brew its own identity,” Oeming noted.
