San Francisco, CA (March 2016)  21st Amendment Brewery’s acclaimed Belgian-style strong beer, Monk’s Blood, which helped spur the craft canning revolution, is back for a limited time. Monk’s Blood is an 8.3% alcohol, dark Belgian-style ale brewed with eight malts including Belgian candi sugar, cinnamon, vanilla bean and dried local black mission figs that is aged on oak for a flavor unlike anything you’ve ever had from a can.
First brewed in 2009, Monk's Blood pushed the boundaries of what craft beer in a can could be. “Back then canned craft beer was not widespread as it is today and we wanted to create a beer that would make people take notice and change their impression of this package,” says co-founder and Brewmaster, Brother Shaun O’Sullivan. “This was a carefully constructed beer that is meant to be enjoyed in a tulip glass and stands up to any of its bottled counterparts.”

Shaun and co-founder, Brother Nico Freccia, began their journey developing the brew as homage to the century’s long tradition of monks brewing and consuming beer as sustenance as their daily routine. “During times of fasting, the monks subsist solely on beer, which they refer to as ‘liquid bread’”, noted Nico. “Beer, quite literally, is in their blood,” he added.
In the spring of 2009, the Brothers headed to Belgium along with well-known Homebrew Chef Sean Paxton, and explored the hop fields of west Flanders where they sampled ingredients and learned traditional Trappist brewing methods in the pastoral countryside. The brothers used traditional methods and Belgian malts and combined these practices with non-traditional practices and West Coast hops to bring a bit of Monk’s Blood to California. The brew is part of 21st Amendment’s Insurrection Series, a limited edition release of a very special beer available in four-packs.

Monk’s Blood is available in cans and on draft starting March 7, 2016 in all 25 of 21st Amendment’s current distribution territories, including CA, OR, WA, AK, ID, MN, OH, MA, NY, IL, NJ, DC, NV, DE, MD, FL, VT, RI, PA, NH, ME, VA, GA, SC and NC.
