Denver, CO - At Mountain Time on Saturday, September 26th, in the auditorium at the Colorado Convention Center, an audience of over 5000 brewers and beer fans took their seats as Brewers Association president Charlie Papazian took the stage. Over the two hours that proceeded, covering 92 categories, the attendees sat anxiously as the winners of the 2015 Great American Beer Festival® awards were announced.
Silver City Brewmaster Don Spencer and his team of brewers & brewery representatives were four of the many in attendance.
The announcement would come in the 91st category: Old Ale or Strong Ale.
"...and the Bronze goes to... 'MASSIVE! 2013', Gigantic Brewing Co., Portland, OR"
"That's fantastic! Northwest beer. Way to go!" Don happily declared, as he had for each medal awarded his regional brethren.
Next followed, "Silver: 'Innsmouth Olde Ale', Narragansett Brewing Co., Providence, RI"
With one Brewery remaining to be named, Mr. Papazian announced "...and the Gold goes to... 'Old Scrooge Christmas Ale', Silver City Brewery, Bremerton, Washington!"
Hearts pounding, Don & crew made their way to the stage to claim the prize coveted by every brewer across America: a Great American Beer Festival® Gold Medal.
"It is such a great honor to be recognized by our peers at the Great American Beer Festival for any medal. Having won another Gold Medal for our Old Scrooge just feels amazing and validating for all of our fans that have enjoyed Old Scrooge throughout the years.", Don remarked.
Brewery owner Scott Houmes had this to add, "I'm so proud of our team. All of our beers that we submit for competition come straight from our production inventory, so the gold medal quality that the panel of judges at the Great American Beer Fest sampled is the same that our fans enjoyed. That's a big deal for us. Executing award winning recipes on an ongoing and consistent basis. That's what our team of brewers strives to."
This was the fourth overall GABF® medal for Old Scrooge Christmas Ale, previously winning Gold in 2009 and Silver in 2014 and 2008 within the same "Old Ale or Strong Ale" category.
An annual Silver City tradition since 1998, Old Scrooge Christmas Ale can be described as "intriguing notes of apple, cherry, and apricot abound from the long boil time, cool fermentation, and extended aging of this dark, malty ale. Celebrate this year's release & save some for next, as this beer matures wonderfully when cellared."
Old Scrooge Christmas Ale will see its annual release in early November, on draft and in 22oz. bottles. The season's festivities also include a vertical tasting event, where bottles of Old Scrooge that have been cellared over several years are shared with a devoted crowd of Silver City supporters and fans. The season also brings a very limited, special edition variant of Old Scrooge Christmas Ale that was aged for a year in a charred, oak barrels, formerly used by a bourbon distillery, imparting that rich whiskey character from their staves.
