Chuckanut Brewery was awarded a Gold Medal for their Chuckanut Dunkel Lager at the Great American Beer Festival (GABF) in Denver, Colorado October 4, 2014. The GABF this year had 5,507 entries by 1,309 breweries. It is the largest commercial beer competition in the world. Award-winning brewers received prestigious gold, silver, and bronze medals in 90 categories establishing the best examples of each style in the U.S. The entries were evaluated by 222 judges from ten countries. Chuckanut Dunkel has been awarded a medal at the GABF multiple times and recently won Silver at the World Beer Cup.

Chuckanut’s Dunkel is a deep reddish-brown color, capped by an impressively sturdy tan head.  As in all lagers, the flavors in Dunkel are produced directly by the ingredients; in this case some of the malts have been deep roasted, giving Dunkel chocolate, coffee, and even licorice notes. There is just enough bitterness to balance out the malt creating a juicy dark lager beer. Chuckanut Brewery’s Dunkel has won a total of 10 prominent medals since entering competitions in 2009(4 Gold, 2 Silver, 1 Bronze) from the GABF, World Beer Cup 2010 and 2014, WA Beer Awards and the NABA.

Dunkel goes great with braised, roasted meats and is a great choice for handling sweet and sour combinations.  Bratwurst, bockwurst, weisswurst- all are great with Dunkel. It’s also a good lunchtime accompaniment with a Rueben sandwich or just about any sandwich containing bacon! Fresh briny ysters are highlighted with the pairing of a pint of Dunkel Lager.
