Charity Preview: BC: Granville Island Brewing & Movember. Together again

There is something very sinful about a writer who is sporting a full beard, instead of going bald for November. But I do ask for some forgiveness as I promote the very few man-centric events focusing on that disease that impacts us all, cancer.

Yep. It’s November again and that means that men finally get their turn to promote cancer awareness through Movember, a month of ‘showing your MO’.

About Movember

During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces, in the US and around the world. With their Mo's, these men raise vital awareness and funds for men's health issues, specifically prostate and testicular cancer initiatives.

Tying this back to beer, Granville Island took the time to remind us that they are promoting their own take on Movember.

Vancouver got ugly with Movember last year, and even uglier with Granville Island Brewing’s pop-out coaster moustaches – thousands of Vancouverites submitted photos of themselves wearing GIB inspired “MOs”, with the local brewery then donating 10 cents for every photo to Movember.

“It gets pretty ugly around the brewery every November but it’s all for a great cause,” says brewmaster Vern Lambourne. “We’re excited to get our Movember team back together and show our support for the community and mens’ health in a fun way.”

Now in its 4th year, GIB’s ‘Show Your MO’ contest and online fundraising network, comprised of participating accounts and retailers, has raised almost $300,000 for Movember.

With the Limited Edition MO coaster, supporters can sport MOs while enjoying a Lions Winter Ale at bars, pubs and restaurants throughout the city. MOs will also be available in specially-marked 6-packs of Lions Winter Ale sold in liquor stores throughout BC.

GIB drinkers are then encouraged to “Show Your MO” and email/Tweet/Facebook post pictures of their growing efforts or the cut-out moustaches, and take part in contests with great prizes, while raising vital funds and awareness for both prostate cancer and male mental health initiatives. Bar and restaurant staff will also be competing in their own contest to raise funds and grow a “MO” for charity.

A “Ther-MO-Meter” on will track the fundraising progress of the Granville Island Brewing Movember team throughout the month.

Be a part of Movember with Granville Island Brewing. Look for specially-marked 6-packs of Lions Winter Ale at your local liquor store and watch for GIB’s Movember cut-out coasters at your favourite pub or restaurant. Supporters can also join our team at

Cheers and healthy wishes to all men out there.
