During the Washington Beer Commission’s Open House (a couple of Saturdays ago, 2/25/2012) we caught up with Silver City by paying them a visit. In between the mini-tours, and sampling from their normal lineup of beers, we caught wind of a new beer, Saint Florian. But this isn’t really a new beer as this is a new idea for the brewery, that Don built.

Brewed to be similar to Inidianola Pale Ale the brewery is proud to announce this new beer.

image Saint Florian is a merging of two ideas supporting a local charity while reminding people about those who give their lives every day, firefighters.

But first some history courtesy of Wikipedia.

Saint Florian (Latin: Florianus; civil name: Florian von Lorch) (died ca. 304) is a Christian saint, and the patron saint of Linz, Austria; chimney sweeps; and firefighters. His feast day is May 4. St. Florian is also the patron of Upper Austria, jointly with Saint Leopold.

So what does this have to do with a beer named after a Christian saint? The answer is simple, supporting local firefighters through the Washington State Council of Fire Fighter Benevolent Fund.

Saint Florian, the patron saint of firefighters, is now the namesake of a northwest IPA designed to raise money for Washington State Council of Fire Fighters Benevolent Funds.  Part of the proceeds from each bottle and keg of Saint Florian IPA sold goes directly to the Benevolent Fund where the beer is purchased in the region.  Silver City Brewery co-owner Scott Houmes said, “We are very proud to grow our long-standing relationship with Fire Fighters and the Benevolent Association. Saint Florian IPA enables us to extend that relationship to other areas around the Puget Sound.”

Silver City Brewery has helped raise money for the Professional Fire Fighters of Kitsap County Benevolent fund every year since 2001 through their annual Oktoberfest Celebration. In that time, the Oktoberfest event has helped raise over $40,000 for the Professional Firefighters of Kitsap County Benevolent Fund.

Saint Florian IPA will raise funds wherever it is sold in Washington. Of this Brewmaster Don Spencer said “We are very honored to present Saint Florian IPA as way to help raise funds for the Benevolent Fund around the Puget Sound. We hope it will also help raise awareness about the Benevolent Fund, as well as the story of Saint Florian, the Patron Saint of Fire Fighters.

For this charity to work each of you needs to visit your local pub near a fire station and ask them to pick up a keg of Saint Florian India Pale Ale. Or if you can’t persuade your pub, then ask your local grocer to pick up a case of Saint Florian, which is going to be available throughout March.
