Des Moines, WA - We have noted that another beer festival is on the horizon and this one isn’t in Seattle, Boise, or Portland.

Sponsored by the Des Moines Rotary Club, Poverty Bay Blues and Brews is a celebration of music, beer, and of course cheer. Located at the Beach Park in Des Moines (pronounced Duh-Moins), you are invited to enjoy local music by such acts as Little Bill & the Blunotes, while enjoying a locally produced brew.

Cost is $25 (prepaid) and $30 (at the door) respectively. Included are six tasting tokens and admission to one of the four featured live bands (throughout the day). Please note this is a 21 and over only event. Sorry to those hoping to bring their kids.

Here is what the organizers have to say about this year’s 2nd Annual event.

The Des Moines Rotary Club will present their 2nd Annual Poverty Bay Blues and Brews Fest on Saturday, September 10 at Des Moines Beach Park. The event is a fundraiser for the Music4Life program which expands music to youth in local schools. The event will feature live blues from the likes of Little Bill & the Bluenotes and Left Hand Smoke. Barbecued bratwurst and Tri-Tip will be served with local brews from Big Al's Brewery, Elliot Bay Brewing, Georgetown Brewing and more.

List of Performers

  • Little Bill and the Bluenotes - Vocalist and bassist "Little Bill" Engelhart is the founder and front man for the Blue Notes - one of the first Northwest rhythm and blues groups and a contemporary of The Fleetwoods, The Ventures, Sonics and Frantics. In a career that spans over 40 years, Bill has played nearly every club and concert hall in the Northwest, including such legendary venues as Parkers Ballroom, The Aquarius, The Spanish Castle, and Lake Hills Roller Rink.
  • Left Hand Smoke - Fronted by brothers Ben Mish, a piano phenom with a blue-eyed soul voice and Will Mish, a guitar wizard who has earned critical nods for his innate sense of melody and blues, and flanked by Irish-born multi-talented rhythm guitarist Ronan O’Mahony and the inimitable stick-man Andrew Cloutier on drums, Left Hand Smoke brews up a blend of neo-soul and rock that is steeped in tradition, yet entirely original and fresh.
  • Rod Cook & Toast - Rod Cook is a well respected, in demand Seattle area guitarist known for his stylistic versatility and soulful, melodic playing. Best known for his work with Folk/funk, Americana artist Laura Love in the 1990's and the early part of this decade, Cook began playing the guitar at the age of nine. In 1996 he launched his own band, Rod Cook and Toast, a band performing original and cover material based in blues, rock, country, Americana, surf and American roots music in general.
  • The Fabulous Roof Shakers - The Fabulous Roof Shakers are composed of veteran rhythm and blues players from Seattle, Olympia, Detroit and Portland. With energetic, danceable music drawing on styles ranging from New Orleans blues, Chicago blues, R&B, Texas shuffle and more, the band has been playing to enthusiastic crowds in and around the Puget Sound area for the last six years.

About Des Moines Rotary Club

The Rotary Club of Des Moines is an association of civic leaders who are making our community and the world a better place to live, learn, work and play.

About Music4Life

The creative concept for Music4Life was born in the fall of 2007 and is an ongoing program. The goal is clear: put musical instruments in good playing condition into the hands of children and youth wishing to use them now. Procure the instruction, supplies and support (like instrument maintenance) to strengthen the elementary instrumental music program and ensure strong music programs throughout Seattle Public Schools. We are acquiring musical instruments, supplies and other resources from members of Rotary clubs throughout the Seattle area and from other citizens who understand the value of music in a child’s life. We work with instrument manufacturers, rental agencies, wholesalers, retailers, and others around the world who have access to serviceable musical instruments. Anyone who loves music and believes in music education for all children can join the effort!
