Portland, OR – Another May has come to pass and it can only mean one thing, Zoo Brew. Starting on Friday June 3rd at 5:00 PM you are being asked to join the Zoo to drink beer and watch animals. But for those of you with plans for the weekend you can still enjoy a sample of Zoo Brew by swinging into the Zoo on Thursday June 2nd.
The Oregon Zoo’s Asian elephants will get an early taste of Zoo Brew this week –– but don’t worry, they won’t be sampling the beers and ales. On June 2, at 10:30 a.m., the elephants will receive some barley, hidden inside in an enrichment toy. The “spent mash,” a byproduct of the brewing process, is being provided by Seven Brides, one of the festival’s participating brewers.
Here is what the organizers had to say about this unique event.
On Friday, June 3, humans join the party, strolling through the zoo while tasting artisan creations from more than 30 regional breweries, at the fifth annual Zoo Brew, sponsored by the Oregon State University Alumni Association.
“Zoo Brew has continued to expand every year,” said Barbara Peschiera, development director for The Oregon Zoo Foundation. “This year, with more than 70 beverages to taste, it’s become one of the largest and most popular beer festivals in Portland.”
The festival runs from 5 to 10 p.m., rain or shine. Three popular local acts –– DJ Angry Little Man, Keegan Smith and the Fam, and the Rolling Tones –– will provide the festival’s soundtrack, performing live on the zoo’s main stage.
True beer aficionados can learn how microbrews are made and discover the flavors and aromas that make each brew unique at OSU’s “Education You Can Taste” sessions. Tickets for these sessions are $15 on site; space is limited.
Tickets to Zoo Brew are $30 in advance ($35 at the door) and include a commemorative tasting glass, 10 tokens and admission to the zoo after 4 p.m. Proceeds from Zoo Brew directly support the zoo.
Participating breweries include Ambacht Brewing, Alameda Brewhouse, Anchor Brewing Co., Blue Mountain Cider, BridgePort Brewing, Cascade Brewing, Columbia River Brewing Co., Crater Lake Soda, Deschutes Brewery, Double Mountain Brewing, Fish Brewing Co., Full Sail Brewing Co., Golden Valley, Hopworks Urban Brewery, Klamath Basin Brewery, Kona Brewing Co., Lagunitas Brewing Co., Laurelwood Brewing Co., Lompoc Brewing Co., Lucky Labrador Brewing Co., MacTarnahan’s Brewing Co., Migration Brewing, Mike’s Hard Lemonade, New Belgium Brewing, Ninkasi Brewing Co., Pale Horse Brewing, Pyramid Breweries, Redhook Brewery, Rock Bottom Brewery, Rogue, Seven Brides, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., Spire Cider, Trumer Pils, Vertigo Brewing, Widmer Brothers Brewing Co.
