It’s now officially May. With this month comes the anticipation of even warmer temperatures and more seasonal releases from nearby breweries.

Last month it was announced on several websites, including, that Oakshire Brewing’s Hellshire barrel-aged Barleywine will be released. For the brewery this will be their first foray into barrel-aged beers and if this is like any of their other releases, should live up to expectations. Aged in previously used Heaven Hill bourbon barrels from the distillery, this 100% aged, 10% ABV Barleywine might be the best thing in this style since Firestone Walker’s Parabola / Abacus, or Lost Abbey’s The Angel’s Share.

Doors open at 8 AM sharp with a brunch menu, complimentary coffee, brewery tastings from Oakshire’s regular lineup, and of course live music. Price for this wax dipped, 22 ounce, release is $15 and quantities will be EXTREMELY limited.

“The Hellshire Beers are an exciting way for us to show our creativity at Oakshire and also layer new flavors onto already outstanding beers,” explains Brewmaster Matt Van Wyk. “We’ve collected a covey of barrels, now nearing 50, that we are aging several wild beers and spirit barrel aged beers. The future looks bright for our barrel aged beer fans.”

According to Jeff Althouse, Co-Founder of Oakshire brewing, “We believe in the artistry of craft beer and I’ve assembled a great team of brewers who are able to highlight their creative and technical skills through our Hellshire program. Led by Brewmaster Matt Van Wyk, I feel our barrel aged program will become equally as popular as our Single Batch Series and our Seasonal and Year-Round Beers.” –source,’s Hellshire story.

Rumor has it there might be a case or two that will be shipped out of the brewery to a couple of well known grocers. But more than likely it would be wise to show up with your $15 and pick up a bottle directly from the brewery.
