Double Mountain, located in Hood River and just up the street from another brewery (Full Sail), is sharing their recent brew Killer Green Fresh Hop IPA, with the people along the Interstate 5 corridor.

Still clueless?

Usually around this time of the year, people are looking forward to Oktoberfest at his her favorite festival, bar or if they are inclined, Munich. Also occurring around the same time is the hop harvest, a time for breweries to start assessing this year’s crop for their regular, seasonal, and limited edition batches for the coming year.

As traditionally exercised, brewers from all over the region (some even come up from California) will pick out a batch of hops, have them same-day shipped to their brewery, and brew a “Fresh Hopped” beer. If you are curious about what a Fresh Hop beer tastes like you can either run a query against a search engine or you can visit one of three spots that Double Mountain will be visiting to celebrate this release.

Here is what they have to say regarding this beer and what they have been up to, leading up to this beer.

So it’s been nearly a month now since we took the trusty Double Mountain van on its annual pilgrimage down to Sodbuster Farms, just north of Salem, where Doug Weathers and his crew grow & pick some of the best hops around. Doug fills us a few totes full of poppin’ Brewer’s Gold hops right before they are to be moved by conveyor over to the drying facility. We slide him a pony keg, then rush the booty back to The Hood, where our crack brew team has the kettle nearing a boil. The still-moist cones fill our big hopback to the brim, delivering their pure oils and resins to the bubbling wort on its way to the fermenter.

Then we do it again. We brewed four batches of Killer Green this year, back to back to back etc., with the last brew hitting the tank about 6am. Go brewers, pull that all-nighter! Let’s just say the coffee maker got an extra workout.

Beer Specifications

The base brew for Killer Green is a nice hefty IPA recipe, featuring a toffeeish malt character and enticingly earthy orange-hued color. The mouthfeel is rich and resinous, the flavors a complex mix of sweet, spicy, herbal and fruity; the finish is long and memorable, with a smooth yet powerful bitterness. In a word — Killer! 7.2% ABV, 83BU.

So, if you aren’t willing to wait till the 5th of October, then head over the Brewery’s taproom where it should be around from now till middle of November. Additionally for those that missed out on the Hood River Hops Festival, you can visit either Portland or Eugene during the Fresh Hop Tastivals.
