With our taxes already filed (weeks ago) we look to today as nothing more than the 15th of April and a Wednesday. Wednesday for us is heading up to the nearby bar for some cheap beers and a brief of conversation with the bartender or some of the regulars and then heading home. So if you are a procrastinator and haven’t filed yet keep in the mind the following facts.
1. With cutbacks in spending, many of the Post Offices will not be open till Midnight as they exercised in years past. So if you have been putting off putting the envelope in the mail I would advise getting it done before 5:00 PM.
2. The origins of Tax Day otherwise known as the 15th of April (sometimes a later date if it falls during the weekend) go something like this.
"The origin of the income tax on individuals is generally cited as the passage of the 16th Amendment, passed by Congress on July 2, 1909, and ratified February 3, 1913; however, its history actually goes back even further. During the Civil War Congress passed the Revenue Act of 1861 which included a tax on personal incomes to help pay war expenses. The tax was repealed ten years later. However, in 1894 Congress enacted a flat rate Federal income tax, which was ruled unconstitutional the following year by the U.S. Supreme Court because it was a direct tax not apportioned according to the population of each state. The 16th amendment, ratified in 1913, removed this objection by allowing the Federal government to tax the income of individuals without regard to the population of each State. For additional information on the history of taxation in the United States, see the Fact Sheet: Taxes prepared by the U. S. Treassury on the history of the U.S. tax system." -source, Library of Congress's Business Reference Services section of their website.
3. There are several known options that you might consider outside of hitting your local pub. I have listed then below as well as given information on how to get there. I am not sure the status for seating at the Art of the Table Dinner, but I will update this post should it have sold out.
Hope your 15th of April is less hectic than most people's but if it isn't at least you have some refuge in the form of a cold pint, some warm conversation, and the occasional stretch of laughter.
