Press Release

PORTLAND OREGON - Five innovators in Oregon's craft beverage industry will come together at Function in NW Portland for 10 days of bottle releases, specialty draft options, and education about what brings them together - sustainable packaging with BottleDrop's Refillable Bottle Program.

"We're more than thrilled to host these five influential and innovative beverage makers," says Casey Armstrong, owner of Function. "Watching the beverage industry continue to innovate from a product standpoint is exciting, but seeing select producers change the landscape of sustainability in the industry is truly remarkable and we couldn't be happier to host this event."

BottleDrop Refillable bottles are unique glass bottles that can be washed and refilled up to 25 times, making them the most sustainable package for craft beverages. The bottles are made locally from recycled glass and are exclusive to the state of Oregon. Each bottle is marked with "BottleDrop Refillable" on the glass as well as the label to make it easy for the consumer to recognize. Once washed and thoroughly inspected, the bottles are re-distributed back to the participating beverage producers.

"We're excited about this different type of collaboration," says Jessyka Dart-Mclean, Marketing Manager at Buoy Beer Company. "The refillable bottle program will be successful if we all work together - from makers to drinkers, our choices in packaging can make a difference."

Along with education about this exciting Oregon craft beverage innovation, the event will have BEER & WINE, fun events, bottle releases, and specialty draft options. Join the Facebook event to stay in the loop.

January 17th - Big Kick-off night with all 5 beverage makers
January 18th - Hang-out with the team from Coopers Hall Winery
January 19th - Bingo Night!
January 20th - Hang-out with the team from Double Mountain Brewery
January 21st - Trivia Night!
January 22nd - Hang-out with the team from Worthy Brewing
January 23rd - Buoy Beer Baltic Porter bottle release PARTY!
January 24th - Gigantic Shake & Shimmy IPA release + tasting of Gigantic's MASSIVE! Barleywine Barrel-aged varietals
January 25th - A toast to the judges of the Oregon Beer Awards
January 26th - Closing night party!

"There's a lot of interest in recycling right now," says Joel Schoening from BottleDrop. "People are asking a lot of questions about packaging and recycling. This event is a great opportunity to enjoy recent releases from great beverage makers, chat with them about why they joined one of the most innovative and sustainable beverage packaging programs in the country, and learn how you can make a difference with BottleDrop Refillables."

Stop by Function January 17 - January 26, from 2pm to close and learn why five of Oregon's premier beverage makers are using refillable bottles - don't forget the beer, wine, and overall enjoyable time!

Oregon Beer Awards in Revolution Hall

Press Release

Portland, OR January 22, 2018 - Willamette Week and the Oregon Beer Awards executive committee are proud to announce that tickets are now on sale for the 2018 Oregon Beer Awards Ceremony to be held on Wednesday, February 28th at Revolution Hall in southeast Portland. The Oregon Beer Awards is the state’s premiere beer competition and one of the few in the nation to feature an awards show open to the public. The 2018 Beer Awards recognize beers, breweries, beer bars, bottleshops, brewers, and festivals in twenty-nine categories with over 1,000 entries.

The 2018 Oregon Beer Awards Ceremony is a multi-media show, with more than two dozen beers pouring for attendees, live acceptance speeches, music, touching video tributes, a hall of fame and even a live-streamed show and pre-show with red carpet interviews and much, much more. (Watch last years live stream of the 2017 awards here .)

1,029 Oregon craft beers were entered and judged in a double-blind competition on January 20-21. Gold, Silver and Bronze medals will be awarded in 24 categories at the Awards Ceremony on February 28. In addition, the OBA Voting Academy (comprised of over 200 members with industry backgrounds) nominate and then vote on five non-beer style categories including Best New Brewery, Best Beer Bar/Bottleshop, Best Beer Festival, Hall of Fame/Lifetime Achievement Award and Brewery of the Year.

Tickets for the public are just $18 and available at bit.ly/oba2018 . $2 of every ticket goes to our non-profit partner Oregon Wild. Oregon Wild works to protect and restore Oregon's wildlands, wildlife and waters as an enduring legacy for all Oregonians.

OREGON BEER AWARDS, THE VISION...

We wanted to see great beers from across the state selected in a blind tasting by the best impartial judges in the state—we wanted a fair, transparent process that everyone felt good about. Second, we wanted everyone in Oregon’s ever-growing beer industry to get together and celebrate the winners in a proper theater—it’s been our goal to make the OBA ceremony a night where folks in the state’s beer industry can catch up with old friends and cheer on their colleagues and peers.

Last year’s Oregon Beer Awards were bigger, better and more fun than even we anticipated. A capacity crowd roared, laughed, booed and even got a little misty-eyed. We were humbled by the response and grateful to all the entrants, judges, volunteers and sponsors for making it happen. This year, we’re going a little bigger. We’ve added a few categories and reorganized others. We’ve also added a fresh hop contest that was judged when the beers were at their peak in early Fall and added a "Hazy Hoppy Beers" category based on new trends.

Part of the objective of the OBA is to reward beers for being harmonious and dynamic. This differentiates it from other competitions in which medals are given based on strictly written style guidelines. As such, a beer with no technical flaws that varies from classic style parameters will be judged in greater esteem than a beer with technical flaws that adheres to style. The Committee drafts descriptions (with input from the industry) that are meant as general guidelines for each category. These are not proscriptive guidelines, which define beer by process, raw materials, or particular technical specifications. Judges use their expertise and familiarity with styles and trends to determine what constitutes the appropriate ‘boundary’ of each style.

Alehouse Event "BELL'Smont Station" at Belmont Station

Hells (YEAH!) Bells!

Monday April 10 | All Hours of Operation

Belmont Station becomes BELL'Smont Station once again as this awesome Michigan brewery brings us another load of goodies from Kalamazoo! A Midwest treat at the midpoint of our 20/20 Experience: 20 Days of Events for 20 Years!

In what is a very rare occasion, we got a chance to design a one-off anniversary beer that we had the honor to brew on the original Bell's system, which is now mostly used for pilot brews and small batches. The finished product, Bell's Belmont Station 20th Anniversary Ale, will be tapped at high noon! (Don't worry, we have plenty of this exclusive draft-only beer!) The only other place it's being poured at this time is at Bell's Eccentric Cafe in Kalamazoo!

Other Bell's on draft: an exclusive Mango Habanero Oberon Ale (very rare and the first time in Oregon!) and everybody's favorite, Two Hearted Ale!

Of course, for sale in the bottle shop, we will have a big stack of cans of Two Hearted Ale and this year's recently released Oberon Ale -- and who knows what else our friends at Bell's will surprise us with!
